Moira Gemmill Memorial Fund

Moira Gemmill

Moira Gemmill made an outstanding contribution to cultural life in the UK. In particular, she spent thirteen years at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London where she oversaw some forty building and gallery projects. These transformed a great building and allowed its outstanding collections to be better displayed as a source of delight and inspiration to ever greater numbers of visitors.

In April 2015, shortly after leaving the V&A to take up a new position at The Royal Collection, Moira was tragically killed in a cycling accident on her way to work. Reaction to her death demonstrated the high regard in which she was held, personally and professionally, and the sense of loss felt by all who knew her.

In response to this loss and in recognition of her outstanding achievements, a fund has been established to create a physical memorial to her. After discussion with those who knew her best and with the approval of her family, it is proposed that Moira should be commemorated in a gallery within the new V&A Museum of Design Dundee.

V&A Dundee is currently under construction on Dundee’s waterfront, and is due to open in 2018. Moira was involved from the outset in the development of the museum and the discussions with the V&A’s four partner organisations in Dundee. These led the project to the point where, shortly before her death, construction had begun. Moira had been a Board member of Design Dundee Ltd since its inception and, after leaving the V&A in January 2015, had remained on the Board as an independent director. In this role, she continued to make a vital contribution to the museum’s development.

V&A Dundee encapsulates much of what Moira was most passionate about: architecture, Scotland and the future of design. It will be the first V&A-branded museum in the world outside London, and the only museum to be dedicated to the celebration of Scotland’s design heritage and its global impact.

For this reason, it has been decided to commemorate Moira in a gallery devoted to the story of this heritage. Ensuring the highest standards of display and interpretation, the gallery will serve as a perennial source of inspiration for people of all ages, and particularly for new generations of designers

Moira was a proud Scot, with a love of design and a belief in its power to create change and improve lives. This memorial will ensure that her name is permanently associated with the best of design, the development of future design professionals, and understanding of the impact of design on everyday life.
