Design is for everyone... it’s at the heart of everything. It enables, enriches and entertains. It’s how we solve problems and improve the world around us.
V&A Museum of Design Dundee brings a new perspective. An international centre of design, it’s where we present the brilliance of Scottish creativity and the best of design from around the world. It’s a place where people from every walk of life can find enjoyment and inspiration.
Scotland is a nation of designers and innovators, from the invention of waterproof fabric by Charles Macintosh, to the pioneering work of Patrick Geddes in improving urban living conditions and creating modern town planning and Ian Callum’s leadership of design at Jaguar.
However, the story of Scotland’s design heritage – and its ability to inspire new creativity for the future – has never been fully told. Now, for the first time, V&A Dundee will bring together hundreds of historically significant objects from the V&A and collections across Scotland to tell this story in one place.
Alongside, our exhibition galleries will host international touring exhibitions from the V&A, making Dundee the only location in the UK outside London to receive these globally significant exhibitions.
Our ambition reaches far beyond our remarkable building. The new museum is a catalyst, a point of connection that brings together people and diverse organisations in a new creative way, demonstrated by the partnership of our five founders: Dundee City Council, University of Dundee, Abertay University, Scottish Enterprise and the V&A.
All of this contributes to a new energy, pride and sense of purpose across the region. This includes the ambitious development of Dundee Waterfront, changing the face of the city. V&A Dundee is at the forefront of that transformation, helping attract new businesses, investors and professionals to the area. Soon it will help bring visitors from all over the world. According to our visitor forecasts we will attract up to 350,000 visitors every year, placing Dundee and the East Scotland region firmly on the map as an exciting new visitor destination.
At home and abroad, we’re developing relationships with many new cultural and industry partners, including from the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, which Dundee joined in 2014 through its designation as the first UNESCO City of Design in the UK.
